DCI launches probe into Mandera IED explosion

Meanwhile, the DCI said its officers are actively pursuing a bodaboda rider who transported the suspects to the hotel and fled immediately after the incident.
Police have begun investigations into an explosion caused by an improvised explosive device (IED) at a restaurant in the Shafshafey area of Mandera on Monday, April 7, 2025.
The blast left one person injured.
A statement from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) confirmed that a multi-agency security team quickly responded to the incident.
They discovered that the explosion had destroyed the roof of the restaurant and caused significant damage to its walls.
The DCI's report also indicated that there were four customers inside the eatery at the time of the explosion.
“A multi-agency security team has launched an investigation into an improvised explosive device (IED) explosion that occurred earlier today at an eatery in the Shafshafey area of Mandera, leaving one person injured," DCI’s statement reads in part.
"Responding swiftly, the team established that the explosion had blown off the hotel’s rooftop and caused visible cracks in the walls,"
The DCI further stated that three of the individuals were unharmed, while one sustained a fractured left femur and pellet wounds to the abdomen.
The injured person was quickly taken to Mandera Referral Hospital, where they are receiving treatment and are reported to be in stable condition.
"At the time of the explosion, there were four customers inside the eatery. Three of them escaped without injury, while one suffered a fractured left femur and pellet wounds to the abdomen," the DCI said.
"The injured individual was swiftly transported to Mandera Referral Hospital, where they are currently stable and undergoing treatment," the statement added.
Law enforcement officials have revealed that preliminary investigations suggest two of the three uninjured individuals may have been the masterminds behind the attack.
The DCI further reported that the individuals of interest have been arrested and are now in police custody as the investigation continues.
"Preliminary investigations indicate that two of those who escaped unharmed are believed to be the masterminds behind the attack. They have been apprehended and are currently in custody as investigations progress," the DCI statement stated.
Security officers are also searching for a bodaboda rider who is believed to have transported the suspects to the hotel and fled the scene right after the explosion.
